The History of Chocolate Part 1 In Latin America cacoa trees grow wild. And that's where our chocolate story begins in 1000BC. The word "kakawa" gave us the word cacao. The people were called Olmec and they were from southeast Mexico. That's where the story ends for these people. We do know that the Maya, in that area, 1000 years later used chocolate a lot in religious rituals, marriage ceremonies and in baptisms. This is where this history really begins. One hundred cacao beans could buy a slave. Even at that times, people used to use counterfeit beans carved out of clay. Until the 19th century, these beans were still used as currency. For consumption, it was used strictly for drinking by the rich, because lete's face it, would you drink dollar bills? until someone came up with solid chocolate to eat in the 1850s. It's preparation was similar to its preparation today. Emperors were buried with jars of chocolate at their side. |
